via The Guardian

Hello JSchoolers! INC is recruiting students that are organized, innovative, familiar with publication production and editing. And also have a positive can-do attitude!

Positions include (to be trained in the fall and assume these roles in the spring):

– Editor-in-Chief: The leader of INC to continue to help the publication grow, develop and identity and improve. Will need to be able to lead meetings, edit, manage content, design and issues while delegating other responsibilities while working with SPJ. Is familiar with adobe products.
— Managing editor: help the editor-in-chief with responsibilities, social media and editing.
– Design chief: lay out the bi-weekly issue, be familiar with web and adobe products.
- Web master: Redesign the INC website. Be familiar with coding and wordpress.

note: these descriptions are a bit vague. But will be further discussed in a set meeting if interested. Applications are not required, but a resume would be preferred.

Though INC is a small publication, it provides an inside look and great connections with Scripps and other professionals. It is a great resume builder that provides wonderful clips, conversations, experiences and great leadership experience! The publication is also affiliated with the local chapter of SPJ, which has been very successful this year and in years past and is also a very worth while organization to be a part of (though, being a member is not a requirement when contributing to INC). All of those qualities lead to more opportunities, contributions and internships!

If interested please contact Lindsay Friedman at lindsayfriedman24@gmail.com.

On Saturday, March 23, 2013, RTDNA will be hosting their annual conference. The conference will be composed of journalism professionals from all over the state.

There will be presentations on ethics in journalism and how to get a job or an internship. Not only can students listen to the professions at the conference but they also will have the opportunity to network with them as well.

“There is lots of networking that goes on throughout the day,” said Sara Nealeigh, RTDNA President. “It’s definitely a good way for students to come in and meet professionals and make connections for jobs and internships in the future.”

Students can purchase conference pre-sale tickets for $10 outside of Scripps 111, or purchase a ticket at the door for $15 on Saturday.

“For the number of professionals that are being brought in, this is really a great deal”, said Nealeigh.

Some speakers to make note of are Scott Saxton and Aaron Ramey News directors who will be available to students for critiquing resumes and watching reels.

As well as Brooks Jarosz, a multi-media journalist, who will be speaking about the importance of being skillful in all aspects of journalism in today’s field.

“Come prepared to speak and interact, don’t just come to stare at the wall”, said Nealeigh. “This is definitely something where students want to have a conversation with the professionals that are here, because they are here for the students.”

Nealeigh recommends that everyone from freshman to senior level attend the conference. These opportunities are ones that students do not come across every day.

SPJ and RTDNA kicked off the return from spring break by welcoming Rudy Maxa to their meeting on Tuesday, March 12.

Rudy Maxa spoke to students and professors at this week’s SPJ and RTDNA.

Rudy Maxa is an Ohio University alum and was Editor-in-Chief at The Post during his college career. Since then, Maxa has worked his way to a successful travel journalism career after spending a number of years at The Washington Post.

“ I always knew I wanted to be a journalist, from the age of 9,” Maxa said, “ I wanted to be the first to tell someone something.”

His Washington Post column was “a barrel of crabs with no top on, and every time a crab would get close to the top, all the other crabs gang up on them to pull them down,” he explained. “ The way a lot of the crabs are pulled down is by gossip and backstabbing”.

As Maxa shared a few of his encounters while working as an investigative reporter at The Washington Post, the audience had those “Oh my gosh” reactions he was looking for.

Though Maxa compared his column to gossip, he also made clear the importance of following the guidelines of the post.

“To write about someone’s personal life, it had to involve public money, or public trust,” Maxa said.

His stories certainly left an impression on listeners.

“His life is incredible and anyone would be lucky to meet him and share his experiences,” Na’Tyra Green said, a sophomore studying journalism.

“ I didn’t decide, travel took over my life”, Maxa said when asked about his switch from investigative journalism to travel journalism.

He was given a short show, then later upgraded to an hour-long program and was then writing travel articles for ABC, MSNBC, and AOL. Maxa has also contributed to National Geographic Traveler magazine.

“Maxa was very engaging. Just when I felt a little bored, he would bring something entirely new into his story,” Becca Taylor said, a freshman studying journalism.

Adventure, exploration, discovery; these are all characteristics of the proud storyteller Kainaz Amaria, who spoke at the Schuneman Symposium on Tuesday, February 26.

While studying international relations and political science at Boston College, Amaria discovered photojournalism.

“Why are you doing this to us?” was her dad’s response to her new found passion.

While traveling from city to city, Amaria realized she knew very little about her own story. That’s when she decided to learn more about her culture. A Fulbright scholarship allowed Amaria to embark on an exploration of the Parsi faith in India.

Just like every other project she had worked on before, Amaria found herself working towards gaining the trust of community members.

The Parsi population has been in a steady decline over the years. Amaria explained that because woman are striving for independence and careers, there is less of a focus on family life, therefore less focus on having kids to keep the population steady.

Being a single, career-oriented women had never been a bad thing, until Amaria realized that was the very thing destroying her people.

“I’m the living embodiment of the death of my community”, said Amaria.

“India tested my sense of purpose, my value, and my core”, reflected Amaria. “We owe it to ourselves to understand who we are”.

Amaria is now working for National Public Radio, also known as NPR. [CS1] The goal at NPR is to increase the collective voice. She went on to explain how projects at NPR are a group effort. For a single project, producers may choose to combine selected pictures with another person’s radio recordings and/or video.

“This is a type of collaboration” Amaria stated.

Amaria will soon be an alumnus of the Ohio University Masters program, and will continue to work with NPR on bigger and better projects.

Meghan Louttit is a multimedia editor for the New York Times. She is an Alumni of Ohio University, and still remembers her time as a student in the Scripps School of Journalism,

She works at the investigative desk at the New York Times designing custom templates for combining multimedia and news stories.

Louttit said, “I’ve been working on custom templates for a year now and each time it is different.”

Louttit knew from the time she was a little girl that she wanted to tell stories; to be the observer and explain what she saw.

“No matter how long I and other colleauges have worked at the Times, we are still humbled to work there”, said Louttit. “This is what happens when collaboration is used”.

Michel du Cille, associate editor in Photography for The Washington Post, will be will be focusing on the importance of embracing many different types of media during his time at the Scuneman Symposium.

Du Cille will be giving his presentation, “Photojournalists Embracing Change in Digital Media,” Tuesday Feb. 26 from 1:30-2:50 p.m. in the Baker Center Theatre.

“I’d like students to understand that all of the things that are happening in the media today, the changes and innovations, they’re moving very fast,” du Cille said. “I want students to know that there will always be room for the storyteller.”

Nerrisa Young, an instructor at Ohio University and person in change of the logistics for the symposium, has high hopes for this year’s presentation from du Cille. She looks forward to hearing the many angles of perspective that du Cille brings to the table.

“In terms of their context and perspective (he) can speak to folks that are interested in doing their own and working individually maybe on their own websites or their own portfolio, but then (he) can also speak to people who are developing full-blown multimedia websites and working for news organizations and enhancing their website appearances and the way they put their news together in a way that’s appealing to people,” Young said.

Young, like many professors on campus, is encouraging her students to attend the symposium.

“I think anytime a student has the opportunity to interact with a pro, to hear that person speak and to also shake hands and exchange ideas and business cards and ask questions is a wonderful learning opportunity,” she said. “That’s what college is about.”

Keith Jenkins, Supervising Senior Producer for Multimedia for NPR, will be giving a presentation at this year’s Scuneman Symposium titled, “Developing a Visual Identity, with Audio.”

His presentation will be Tuesday, Feb. 26 at 10:30-11:50 in the Baker Center Theatre and, Jenkins said, will be focusing on “the concept of being conversant across a lot of different discipline within visual and audio storytelling.”

“Students should broaden their horizons on what skills they’re going to need to be successful journalists, Jenkins said. “(They) may not need to do each, but (they) need to understand when one is more appropriate than the other.”

Narissa Young, instructor at Ohio University and person in change of the logistics of the symposium, is excited to hear Jenkin’s perspective on the changing world of new media.

“Everything is visual today, and I think (this) gentleman (is) going to really bring a lot of expertise and a lot of context and perspective into how we are presenting and packaging news today and that it must contain a lot of visual elements to it,” Young said.

She is also looking forward to learning something herself.

“I’m going as a student, as well,” she said. “To learn from these folks because I’m teaching it and we just need to know these things.”

Abrahm Lustgarten writes about energy, water and the environment at ProPublica. He is a former staff writer at Fortune, and his work has appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Businessweek, Scientific American, Esquire and elsewhere. He is the recipient of a MacArthur grant for international reporting and has won numerous awards, including a 2009 George Polk award for environmental reporting for his investigation into the risks to water, health and climate brought by hydraulic fracturing for natural gas. Lustgarten is the author of two books. The first, “China¹s Great Train: Beijing’s Drive West and the Campaign to Remake Tibet,” was noted by The Washington Post as one of the best reads of 2008. The second, an investigation into the history of BP management titled “Run to Failure: BP and the Making of the Deepwater Horizon Disaster,” evolved from his 2010 Emmy-nominated documentary about BP for PBS’ “Frontline” and was published in 2012. Lustgarten has a master’s degree in journalism from Columbia University and a bachelor’s degree in anthropology from Cornell University. He has reported from Iran, China, Nepal and Russia, among other places.
